Tattoos are meant to last forever—but for many people, forever changes. Whether it’s an old design that no longer feels right, a name that brings back the wrong memories, or simply a tattoo that hasn’t aged well, more and more people are turning to laser tattoo removal to reclaim clear skin.

If you’ve ever wondered “How does tattoo removal actually work?”, this guide will break down the science and show you exactly what to expect, step by step.

The Science Behind Laser Tattoo Removal

To understand tattoo removal, you first need to know why tattoos are permanent. When a tattoo artist injects ink into the skin, the ink particles are too large for your immune system to fully remove them. That’s why tattoos stick around for life. Laser tattoo removal works by sending short bursts of light energy into the skin. The laser specifically targets the ink particles, breaking them into much smaller pieces. Once the particles are shattered, your body’s immune system gradually clears them away—fading the tattoo with each session.

This process is why removal takes multiple treatments: your body needs time to process and flush out the ink safely.

Step-by-Step: What Happens During a Session

Wondering what your first appointment will feel like? Here’s a breakdown:
1. Consultation & Skin Assessment
We will invite you into our clinic for a free consultation and will evaluate your tattoo, skin type, and overall health. This ensures the laser settings are safe and effective and the treatment is right for you. Once we are both happy, answered any questions you may have, we will then offer you a patch test. Once a patch test has been done, we can complete your first session at least one week later.

2. Laser Application
During the session, the laser is directed at your tattoo in short pulses. Clients often describe the sensation as similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. Or if you have fried an egg and you get back splash of the fat on your skin. Although to some this may be quite uncomfortable, sessions are quick—sometimes just 2-10 minutes depending on tattoo size.

3. Aftercare & Healing
After treatment your skin may be red, swollen, or feel sunburned, further down the line you may even get pin point bleeding, bruising and itching (this is a sign your skin is healing). All of which are natural side effects. It is very important that you avoid any heat related activity for 24 hours after your appointment and to follow the aftercare.

Why Different Tattoos Respond Differently
Not all tattoos fade at the same rate. Factors that affect removal include:

  • Ink colours – Black ink is easiest to remove, while blues and greens will need to be treated with a ruby laser. (We unfortunately can not remove these colours)
  • Tattoo depth & quality – Professional tattoos often use more ink, making removal longer than amateur tattoos.
  • Location on the body – Tattoos on areas with stronger blood flow (like the chest or arms) fade faster than those on hands, feet, or ankles.

What Makes Laser Tattoo Removal Safe?
Laser removal is considered the safest and most effective way to remove unwanted ink. We are lucky to have a medical grade, advanced technology, Q-switch laser which allows precise targeting of ink without harming surrounding skin. Choosing a trained professional is critical—your skin’s health should always come first.

What Results Can You Expect?
Most tattoos require 8–12 sessions for full removal, spaced 6–8 weeks apart minimum. Bigger the gaps between each session are better. Some may fade completely, while others may lighten enough for a clean cover-up. Before-and-after results can be dramatic and you can find many examples of these on our social media platforms . Many clients see visible fading after just a couple of sessions, with the tattoo gradually becoming lighter until it’s gone.

Frequently Asked Questions About Laser Tattoo Removal

1. Does laser tattoo removal hurt?

Most clients describe the feeling as similar to a hot rubber band snapping against the skin. We do have a cooling device and ice packs which can help reduce discomfort during treatment.

2. How many sessions will I need to remove my tattoo?

The number of sessions depends on the tattoo’s size, colours, ink depth, and your skin type. On average, most tattoos require 8–12 sessions spaced about 6–8 weeks apart for complete removal.

3. Can all tattoo colours be removed?

Yes, but some colours respond faster than others. Black and dark inks are the easiest to remove, while greens, blues, and yellows are the hardest. We unfortunately can not remove blue or green ink, however we do recommend a couple of places who have a ruby laser.

4. Will laser tattoo removal leave a scar?

When performed by a trained specialist using the right technology, laser tattoo removal typically does not leave scarring. Following aftercare instructions carefully is important to ensure smooth healing.

5. How much does laser tattoo removal cost?

Pricing varies based on the tattoo’s size. Our prices start from £45 per session. If you would like to send us over a photo we can give you an idea on cost.
