For many women, perimenopause can feel confusing and frustrating, especially when it comes to skin. You may suddenly notice dryness, sensitivity, breakouts, pigmentation, or changes in firmness, even though you haven’t changed your skincare routine. I get asked so many questions about skin especially when it comes to perimenopause so I thought id write a blog to help answer some of those questions and concerns.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not imagining it. Hormonal changes during perimenopause have a direct impact on skin health, and understanding what’s happening is the first step to supporting your skin through this transition.

What Is Perimenopause?

Perimenopause is the phase leading up to menopause, often beginning in your late 30s or 40s. During this time, oestrogen levels fluctuate, sometimes dramatically and because oestrogen plays a vital role in skin health, these changes often show up on the skin first.

Many women tell us:

•“My skin suddenly feels dry no matter what I use”

•“I’ve become sensitive to products I’ve used for years”

•“I’m getting pigmentation or breakouts out of nowhere”

These experiences are incredibly common.

Common Skin Changes During Perimenopause
Dryness and Dehydration – Oestrogen helps the skin retain moisture. As levels fluctuate, the skin barrier can weaken, leading to tightness, flakiness, and a dull appearance.

Increased Sensitivity – Skin may react more easily to active ingredients, fragrance, or over-exfoliation. Products that once worked beautifully may suddenly cause redness or irritation.

Pigmentation and Uneven Skin Tone – Hormonal changes combined with sun exposure can trigger pigmentation, particularly on the face, hands, and chest.

Loss of Firmness and Elasticity – Collagen production naturally slows during perimenopause, which can lead to skin feeling thinner, less firm, and more prone to fine lines. (We have a great new product for this, come and get a sample and try it on your skin).

Adult Breakouts- Hormonal imbalance can also cause congestion and breakouts, even in women who have never struggled with acne before. This is my problem at the moment, across my forehead 🙁

Why Your Old Skincare Routine May No Longer Work
During perimenopause, skin needs change, often quite suddenly. Continuing with harsh actives, frequent exfoliation, or trend-driven routines can actually make things worse.

At this stage, skin benefits most from:

•Barrier repair
•Hydration and nourishment
•Gentle exfoliation
•Targeted professional treatments

Less really is more.

How Professional Treatments Can Help
At our clinic, we focus on supporting the skin rather than overstimulating it.

Hydrating & Barrier-Repair Facials – Treatments like Illumi facials and Dermalogica facials restore hydration and strengthen the skin barrier.

LED Light Therapy (Dermalux) – LED therapy is particularly beneficial during perimenopause, helping to calm inflammation, stimulate collagen, and support healing, all without downtime.

Laser Treatments for Pigmentation & Redness – When appropriate, laser can safely address pigmentation and vascular concerns that become more common during hormonal change.

Microneedling (When Suitable) – Microneedling can help stimulate collagen, but timing and skin preparation are key during perimenopause to avoid overstressing the skin.

The Importance of Tailored Skincare
This is not the time to follow social media trends or copy someone else’s routine. Perimenopausal skin is highly individual. Professional skincare, such as Dermalogica, allows us to:

•Support the skin barrier
•Address sensitivity safely
•Target pigmentation and ageing concerns
•Adjust routines as hormones continue to change
