We have had so many enquiries recently about treating sun damage however now (summer) is not the right time to treat! The best time to treat sun damage / pigmentation is the winter months.
I thought I would write a blog round this topic to help answer some common questions.
So what causes pigmentation and sun damage?
Pigmentation occurs when the skin produces excess melanin, the pigment responsible for skin colour. This can be triggered by several factors, including:
- UV exposure
- Hormonal changes (such as pregnancy or perimenopause)
- Ageing
- Inflammation or skin trauma
Over time, repeated sun exposure causes pigment to rise to the surface of the skin, where it becomes more visible.
Types of Pigmentation
Sun Spots
Flat, brown spots caused by cumulative sun exposure. They commonly appear on the face, hands, chest, and shoulders.
Age Spots
Often used interchangeably with sun spots, these develop over time due to both UV exposure and ageing.
Freckles
Small pigmented spots that darken with sun exposure and fade slightly when sun exposure is reduced.
Uneven Skin Tone
Patchy pigmentation or discolouration that makes the skin appear dull or uneven.
How Laser and IPL Treats Pigmentation
Laser and IPL treatments work by delivering targeted energy into the skin to specifically target excess pigment. The pigment absorbs the energy, breaks down into tiny particles, and is then gradually cleared by the body’s natural processes.
Importantly, laser and IPL technology is designed to:
- Target pigment without damaging surrounding skin
- Improve clarity and brightness
- Create a more even skin tone
Results are progressive, meaning improvements are seen gradually over a course of treatments.
Why the Face and Hands Are Most Affected
The face and hands are constantly exposed to the sun often without us realising it. Hands, in particular, are one of the most common areas for sun damage because sunscreen is frequently forgotten.
The Impact of Driving and Glass Exposure
Many people don’t realise that UVA rays can penetrate glass, including car windows. This means your skin is exposed to UV damage even when you’re driving.
This is why we often see:
- More pigmentation on the hands
- Increased sun damage on the driver’s side of the face
- Uneven pigmentation, often more noticeable on the right hand or side of the body, depending on driving habits
Over time, this repeated exposure contributes significantly to pigmentation and premature ageing.
Why SPF is Essential
You will hear me talking about this all the time in the clinic – you must be wearing SPF daily!! Laser and IPL treatments can effectively reduce pigmentation, but without daily sun protection, pigmentation will return.
Daily SPF helps to:
- Prevent new pigment from forming
- Protect treated skin
- Maintain laser and IPL results
- Slow down further sun damage and aging
SPF should be applied daily to the face, neck, and hands, including cloudy, rainy days and when driving.
The Role of Skincare
Professional skincare supports pigmentation treatment by:
- Strengthening the skin barrier
- Encouraging healthy cell turnover
- Supporting even skin tone
- Protecting results long-term
Using the correct skincare alongside laser and IPL is just as important as the treatment itself. If you need help, advise or support with skincare please do get in touch. We have an amazing skincare range.
Results and Maintenance
Pigmentation doesn’t develop overnight and it doesn’t disappear overnight either. Most clients require a course of treatments to achieve optimal results. Usually we say 1-4 sessions maybe needed and the treatments would every 4 weeks.
Please don’t worry, pigmentation is incredibly common and can be treated effectively. With the right treatment plan, preventative care, and daily sun protection, it can be safely and effectively managed.
If pigmentation or sun damage on your face or hands is something you’re concerned about, we’re always happy to help. A professional consultation allows us to assess your skin, explain your options, and create a personalised treatment plan that delivers safe, long-term results.
