Protecting your skin from the sun is one of the most important parts of your laser journey, whether you are having laser hair removal, tattoo removal, or skin rejuvenation treatments.
Laser treatments work best when your skin is at its natural, untanned state. When the skin becomes tanned, the laser has a harder time distinguishing between natural pigment in the skin and the target (whether that is hair, tattoo ink, or areas of concern in the skin).
This can increase the risk of side effects such as burns, blistering, pigmentation changes, and irritation. It can also reduce the effectiveness of your results.
We completely understand that people want to enjoy the warmer weather. There is nothing wrong with that. However, if you are spending more time outdoors, going on holiday, or likely to develop a tan, it may be best to pause your treatments during the summer months and restart in September or October, once your tan has fully faded.
What Counts as Sun Exposure?
When we talk about avoiding sun exposure during your laser treatment course, we are not just referring to sunbathing or holidays abroad.
Sun exposure can happen during everyday life. Walking to the shops, sitting in the garden with a cup of tea, enjoying lunch outdoors, school runs, gardening, dog walks, or even driving can all expose your skin to UV rays.
It does not take hours of sunbathing to affect your skin. Gradual exposure over days and weeks can be enough to create a tan, even if it is subtle and you have not noticed it yourself.
This is why we recommend applying SPF daily to all exposed treatment areas, regardless of how sunny it feels. UV rays can still affect the skin on cloudy days, and consistent protection is one of the best ways to keep your treatment safe and effective.
Why We May Need to Postpone Your Appointment
Your safety will always come first.
If you attend your appointment and we believe your skin is tanned, we will not be able to proceed with treatment that day. This applies to all laser treatments, including hair removal, tattoo removal, and skin rejuvenation.
We know this can be disappointing, especially when you have been looking forward to your session. Please do not be disheartened. This is never a decision made lightly. It is always based on protecting your skin and ensuring the best possible outcome from your treatment.
If you are ever unsure whether you have had too much sun exposure before your appointment, please let us know. We would always rather check with you in advance than risk treating skin that is not suitable on the day.
How to Keep Your Treatment Plan on Track
- Wear SPF 30 or 50 every day on exposed areas.
- Avoid intentional sunbathing during your treatment course.
- Keep treated areas covered where possible.
- Let us know if you have recently been on holiday or had significant sun exposure.
- Wait 3–4 weeks after returning from holiday before resuming treatment, to allow any active tan to fully fade.
Following this advice gives you the best chance of achieving safe, effective results while keeping your skin healthy and protected.
Remember, laser treatments are a journey, not a race. Sometimes a short pause is the safest and most effective option.
At the end of the day, our goal is not simply to complete your treatments as quickly as possible. Every decision we make is centred around your safety, comfort, and achieving the best possible results across all treatments we offer.
Our priority is not simply completing treatments, it is to ensure every treatment is performed safely, effectively, and with your skin’s long-term health in mind.
