I get asked all the time, “What’s best for my skin?”
Unfortunately, the answer usually isn’t a viral TikTok trend.
Social media skincare trends often prioritise instant results over long-term skin health. While a product or technique may look impressive after one use, what you don’t see is the damage happening beneath the surface. In my clinic, the most common issue I see as a result of these trends is a compromised skin barrier and once that barrier is damaged, it can be difficult and time-consuming to restore healthy, balanced skin.
A healthy skin barrier is essential for maintaining hydration, preventing sensitivity, and keeping skin calm and glowing. When it’s disrupted, skin can become red, irritated, inflamed, dehydrated, and prone to breakouts or premature ageing.
Common TikTok Skincare Mistakes;
Over-Exfoliation
Exfoliating acids, scrubs, and retinoids are everywhere on TikTok, often used daily or layered together. While exfoliation has its benefits, too much strips the skin of its natural protective oils, leading to sensitivity, dryness, and inflammation. More is not better when it comes to exfoliation. Over exfoliation can also lead to vascular vessels because you are causing trauma to the skins surface.
Mixing Strong Active Ingredients
One of the biggest mistakes I see is people mixing multiple strong actives such as retinol, vitamin C, AHAs, BHAs, and benzoyl peroxide often in the same routine. These ingredients are powerful and effective when used correctly, but combining them incorrectly can overwhelm the skin, causing irritation, breakouts, and long-term barrier damage.
Using Products Not Suited to Your Skin Type
Just because a product works for someone else doesn’t mean it will work for you. TikTok trends rarely consider skin type, concerns, age, lifestyle, or environment. Using products that aren’t suited to your skin can worsen acne, increase sensitivity, or dry the skin out unnecessarily.
Why Professional Advice Matters
Skin is not one-size-fits-all. What works for one person may completely disrupt another person’s skin barrier.
Healthy skin is built through consistency, balance, and personalised care, not quick fixes or viral trends. Professional guidance ensures that the products and ingredients you’re using are appropriate for your skin type and concerns, and that they’re introduced safely and effectively.
